Typograph and FontLab

FontLabFrom their website

FontLab 8 is an all in one font editor for Mac and Windows, used by students and by foundries. You draw with pen, brush and calligraphy tools.

It handles the production side too: kerning, variable fonts, hinting and every common format. A lifetime licence is $499, and a 3 month licence is $97.

TypographStart from letters, not from nothing

Typograph works the other way round from a classic font editor. You start from a template, or describe the typeface you want, and then tune the letterforms.

It is trained on 50,000 hand drawn glyphs, supports 66 languages and runs in the browser. You own full rights to the fonts you make.

Time for a family of 10 weights is our own estimate for an experienced designer making a Latin typeface with spacing and kerning, not a figure from the makers. Real projects vary.

Which to pick
Both are good at different things

Pick FontLab if you want full control over drawing and production, on Mac or Windows.

Pick Typograph if you want a typeface ready to use without drawing it from scratch. Try Typograph.
